Inner Sanctum
I was painting indoors at a Botanical Garden, looking through a window at the back side of bank of wisteria trees. This bird's nest was situated deep within one of them and backlit, with clusters of wisteria protecting it from view outside the building. Although I love painting wisteria, the bird's nest needed to be the focus, and my composition was created around that. I reworked the wisteria over and over, adding, eliminating, creating softer and softer edges, correcting the light between the flowers and branches, making sure that all elements supported the idea of the protected "Inner Sanctum".
