Out of the Blue
On a boat ride in Sardinia I was abruptly confronted with this huge rock arch jutting out into the tranquil waters. Its texture and colors captured me! This painting began with a hard pastel sketch, then India ink for the deepest shadows, followed by hard pastels in an alcohol wash underpainting and impasto with pumiced gesso. Finally soft pastels and pencils brought in definition.
